About Clean Air GA

About us

Who we are, what we want, and why we protect the identity of neighbors who report.

Who we are

Neighbors who want to breathe easy at home.

We are residents of East Dublin and Laurens County, Georgia: families, homeowners, retirees, and workers who are tired of keeping our windows shut and canceling cookouts because of the smell.

We aren’t against jobs or local business. We want the air in our community to be clean, and we want the rules that protect it to be enforced.

The problem

Rendering odors from the Darling Ingredients plant

Darling Ingredients Inc. operates an animal rendering plant in East Dublin. According to Georgia EPD permit records, the facility processes inedible animal byproducts from the beef, swine, and poultry industries, plus used cooking oil and grease trap waste, into products like meat and bone meal, feather meal, and tallow. It runs several process lines and a wastewater treatment system with anaerobic lagoons.

Residents report persistent foul odors in homes, yards, and across town. A community petition, Dublin Stinks, says repeated complaints haven’t solved the problem.

Our goals

What we’re asking for

Document every incident

A complete, timestamped record of every odor event our community experiences.

EPD inspections & accountability

Regular state inspections and real follow-through when permit conditions aren’t met.

Independent monitoring

Odor and air monitoring by people who don’t answer to the plant.

Stronger odor controls

Better capture and treatment of odors at the source.

Transparency

Public access to inspection results, complaint outcomes, and permit changes.

Confidentiality

Why we ask EPD to keep your name confidential

In a 2007 odor complaint about this plant (then Griffin Industries), the complainant told EPD that “someone from Griffin had come to his house to talk about it,” and the EPD inspector wrote, “( I Am Not Aware How Griffin Industries Knew That [the complainant] Had Made An Odor Complint [sic])”. Source: EPD complaint record #47870.

In 2023, Darling asked EPD to share complaint information with the company as soon as possible, including each complainant’s general location. Source: EPD complaint record #103101.

That’s why every complaint email from our form asks EPD to keep the sender’s identity confidential. It’s a request, not a legal guarantee. For full anonymity, call EPD at (706) 667-4343.
